Gold earring backings $90 each at jewelry store

I lost the 14k gold backings to my real pearl earrings. The earrings were purchased from Fred Meyer jewelry store. For them to order a replacement it would be $90 EACH, so $180 for two backings. They said the price of gold has gone up. When I look online for 10 14k backings I see pricing around $20-30 for a pair. Why is it so much more expensive at the jewelers? I'm willing to pay $90 each if the quality is better, I just wondered why.
