Non-Muslim Interested in Islamic Prohibition on Alcohol

Hello,

I’m a non-Muslim currently struggling with a really rough 2 day hangover from New Year’s Eve. I’m still feeling pretty rough today although a lot better (Jan 2nd) but yesterday was awful. Constant vomiting, diarrhea, and writhing in deep pain in my bed for basically the whole day. I’m starting to re-think my relationship with alcohol and its role in the world, and I’m really interested in how you guys have it banned in your faith. What are the reasons for this in Islam? I’ve come to the conclusion I think alcohol is poison. Friends are telling me to just stay away from liquor, and only indulge in beer and wine, but I feel like even this is not ideal. I want to separate alcohol from my life, and I’m interested in the Islamic theology behind Muslim’s philosophy on alcohol.

Please respond with your thoughts, and I apologize if this post is disrespectful, I have nothing but respect for Islam and the Ummah and am sending love and respect to the global Muslim community
