Should we wait a few months to submit spousal AOS?
Hi all,
H1B worker here (Canadian citizen). Getting married to my USC fiancée in a few weeks. Wondering if it’s worth waiting a couple of months to file AOS.
The only properly joint finances we have right now is two leases. We’ve been living together since summer 2023. We’ve been together since early 2022. We’re planning on combining our finances further (I’m putting her on my health insurance, we’re combining our investments and certain accounts, etc…) after we get married in March. This will take some time and we’re going on our honeymoon in May.
I’m thinking of waiting until after we get back from our honeymoon to file all the necessary paperwork so I don’t have to worry about any travel related issues (I know, I know, H1B exemption and all, but out of an abundance of caution) and to give us time to strengthen our financial ties. My H1B is at least good until mid 2027 without needing to apply for an extension and my employment is rock solid.
Any thoughts?
I have a folder on my laptop for all of our flights, pictures together, leases, mail sent to our shared address, wedding invitations with both of our names on them, etc…
