Platelet count 0 - Experiences, advice, expectations?
Hey y’all, I’m writing this partly to vent and partly to ask the community for any experiences, tips, or advice on this matter. Also a warning to other concerned doggy moms/dads.
Just left my 4 year old healthy husky at the ER for 2 days to be monitored and help recover his platelets, and full screening to find out what’s the underlying cause.
He’s been completely normal except 4 days ago, he chewed on a dental treat and his gums would not heal up for days after, kept bleeding. Next day, he then started getting blood spots in his eyes that got worse. I took him to my main vet the next day (Monday), who was pretty lax on the mouth issues, but referred me to an ophthalmologist.
I took him this morning to the Optho, and after close examination from him and the resident Dr he told me that the blood spots were not normal and I should take him to the ER. His spots in his eyes had worsened at that point, and mouth seemed a little better/same.
I went straight there, they did a blood test there and said 0 on platelets and anemic. He then recommended to monitor him overnight, what I mentioned earlier.
I’m just worried sick and also upset, as my main vet had blood work done last month for pre-screening for his dental cleaning this month. The ophthalmologist and ER doctor informed me the low count and anemia was present on that test, yet I got a voicemail a few days later after pre-screening, informing me everything was fine and we would go ahead with dental cleaning this month. I had voiced my concerns about the 2 bleeding issues happening at the same time with this guy, which the Optho and ER Dr were quick to point out. I hate to say it but he brushed it off and told me the gums would heal up fine, and they’d get a better look during his dental cleaning with X-rays and such. Thank god he did tell me to take him to the Optho. He also had said last month that dog didn’t really need a dental cleaning, which I found strange because my other office had told me it was a good idea, and he clearly has plaque.
I pray he stabilizes and am trying to figure out his treatment moving forward. Love and support appreciated, my girlfriend and I love visiting this page and she posts him sometimes. He is the “Whiskey” husky.
It’s all so sudden and I’ve always feared something like this happening, I take him to the vet often and I’ve always asked if there’s more preventative screenings I can do, I’ve always been told he’s fine, he’s healthy, etc. He’s always acted normal and still did thru today.
Thank you husky family, much love and keep Whiskey in your prayers.
