his house (2020), honest opinion... (heavy spoiler!)
this movie really intrigued me because how it contains a similar social commentary element, just like one of my fav movie of all time, get out, so i decided to give it a watch today.
however, for the first thirty minutes, i stopped watching for two times, because it was not what i expected at all. What i assumed it was before watching is about the struggle of African refugees, not gonna lie, i wasnt even expecting a horror film. I thought the focal points would be for instance, police brutality, adapting to a new environment, discrinimation...
but what it turned out to be were jumpscares after jumpscares, some of them are actually chilling. As someone who absolutely hated jumpscares, my first impression of this movie was very mediocre.
i checked the time, i wouldnt be able to change to another movie. So i decided to hold on, telling myself to finish it regardless.
i am glad i continued.
after i figure out the whole thing, i thought this movie was fabulous, its none like other horror films, the story proceeds in a very unique way. One thing it stands out to me about this movie is how it depicts the characters. Bol, who looks forward to his new life in Uk, views the place they live as their actual home. From his pov, he and his wife grinded for so long, and finally got a opportunity of life in a new environment, so he deserves everything, whereas his wife, Rial couldnt get over the grief and guilt of losing their daughter on the way evacuating to a new country. the ghosts are basically those who have the same background as them, including their daughter but are not as lucky as them to successfully make it to UK, symbolizing the guilt and insecurity of the two. In the film, both of them often experience strange events like hearing someone talking, or seeing unknown spirits hidden inside the house. The reaction of Bol was mostly terrified and scared, while Rial seemed to understand what it was rapidly. Nonetheless, Bol decided to just ignore it, believing that theres no ghost existing. He thought the place he lived was just haunted, even reaching out to the person responsible for their immigration matters to seek for the possibility of finding another place to live.
most of the parts of the movie is really good, but unfortunately, i dont like how it ends. The only thing i found interesting and rational about the ending was that they actually dont have a daughter, the girl was sort of abducted by Bol, because that gave them a chance of getting on the bus.
The ending is, Bol finally agreed to exchange his life for summoning back Nyagak. Just as i thought the movie gonna ended this way, Rial stepped up and killed the monster. they accepted the monster( their guilt), realizing the fact that it will stay with them forever.
although i enjoy this one more than the babadook overall, but strictly judging based off the similar ending, i personally found the babadook much more rational and entertaining.
So they are just going to let the evil spirits/ guilt hunt them every day? doing nothing to make up for their mistake?
let me how yall feel about it
