recently married - help me decide between a house or a condo?

prices for both options are quite similar, althought we might have to pay more for a house because of property taxes, whereas the condo only has a condo fee (as far as i know)

condo

pros:

  • high ceiling
  • feels more "homey"
  • big windows, lots of natural light (good for the winter blues)
  • huge space (2000 sqft)
  • 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
  • 5 minute drive to a park
  • close to downtown
  • underground parking
  • won't have to worry about maintenance

cons:

  • not traditional
  • not sure what it will be like to raise a family in a condo
  • no backyard
  • no garage
  • area can be sketchy
  • may not be accommodating for a growing family

house

pros:

  • traditional
  • backyard
  • garage
  • allows for more freedom with modifications, maintenance
  • more privacy
  • may be closer to schools
  • more adaptable for growing family

cons:

  • smaller space compared to the condo
  • can be more expensive if we have to develop the basement, add fence
  • residential, further from downtown
  • a lot of maintenance (fall, winter)
  • low ceilings
