Goalie pad question

The strap at the very bottom that goes under the skate, always hangs so long in my first three newbie games I've been stepping on it. The last game I tried to tuck it in but it came undone. I feel like this strap isn't even important because my toe ties are on a Bungie cord. Am I wrong? Are they important? Or can I remove them
