It is 3D printed but super sturdy. It opens and locks with a twist of the dial and transforms into a cube. Super cool! What a neat thing to have. (Functional in the sense that it opens and rotates. Not functional in the sense of it summoning trans dimensional beings. <i>At least not that I know of</i>
