Why did they change Gellert decision in DH?

In book DH Grindelwald doesn’t tell Tom where the wand is, which fits with the general theme of the book (love) and goes with the idea that he had remorse. In the movie he just tells him. Why? It’s such a dumb change that goes against his whole use of his character.
