Why didn't ippo give Kimura advice before the fight with Mashiba?

Ippo fought Mashiba in the rookie tournament finals with a broken right hand, yet he defeated Mashiba by destroying his left hand, and Kimura didn't notice and took advantage of that weakness. Why?
