Jon being king IS the subversion
Not sure if it applied but after consuming a certain piece of media recently where the actual heir to the throne became king, not saying for spoilers what it was, but it got me thinking. I always thought grrm doesn't really "subvert" expectations, he usually just writes the logical series of events. That being said, Jon becoming king after all the unexpected twists would be the subversion because a simple reason: he becomes king through his accomplishments support and effort, not blood. We know he's the heir, bit outside lord Reed, no one knows this. Every increase in position and standing he has had for... I guess up to season 6, but season 5 for sure is from his own skills. Moreover, him being chosen as the one position with the name "lord" that is a elected position in all of Westeros (excluding the Iron Islands for this example), basically means it's written he is written as ascending his nobility through popular support. If he had become king because of all this and a bunch of stuff that would of course need to be edited or added, the big one no one realizing his blood, and it ended on choosing a monarch and he got chosen because that honor he kept despite dying for it the last time he got elected? Nice circle. The monarch election is still dumb, but still it sounds like a huge improvement personally to me.
