Best version to play modded? (Haven't played minecraft in two years)

I want to add some mods to my playtrough and I wonder which version is the best? Which of these newer versions is good when it comes to fps and mod availability? I will be using forge and maybe 50-80 mods that will expand on the the current game, nothing too crazy.
