Does anyone else feel this way about spicy scenes?
My take on sex scenes is: I'm okay with them if they're about a relationship transforming from one thing to another. So the first time people have sex, sure, give the details about how this happened, because that's major character development. Or if they used to hate each other and now they've warmed up, and it's a major transformation of the relationship, then I'm interested.
But if it's just a happy couple going at it for the second or third or tenth time, it's incredibly boring, and I will almost always skip it. My personal rule I wish writers would abide by is: if there's no transformation in the relationship, then we don't need the scene. Just do a closed door. If something is transforming in a meaningful way, then readers probably want the scene.
Unless the book is literally just smut, in which case, the author is free to go to town on all those kinks. But that's not most fantasy romance.
