Partial Dumpster Fire Review- King of Flesh and Bone
As someone who enjoyed feathers so vicious I feel like a traitor writing this. But Im just going to say it: I freaking hated this book- at least what I read of it.
So here’s the caveat, I got to 50% before saying, “fuck this”.
At a 50% mark I feel like I have enough material to form an opinion, but with that said, there’s themes and scenes that I clearly did not get to. So every shit take I’m about to give, take with a grain of salt or just roll your eyes at- because this gal didn’t couldn’t finish the book!
Short review: a widow midwife who’s struggling with fertility (which if you think about it is so shitty and would be so sad) accidentally goes to the realm of the death guy (he’s a god but I refuse to call him that because I don’t like him 🙂). It took a while to catch on and I was very confused, but there’s zombies and it’s his fault- because he sucks. Actually the review can be a single sentence: this dude sucks.
What I liked Zombies- the dead coming back to life one night a month was creepy and gross and everything I love for in a book. midwife- love a FMC whose is a healthcare hero. The FMC- she really hates this dude. And I love that for her.
What I disliked MMC- remember when I said that MMC from Song of the Darkwood was a baby back bitch. I take back the title and bestow it to Enosh but with a capital Baby Back Bitch. He’s a BBB. Like maybe I’ve read too many books with sad back stories (zevander and max cough cough) that his did not impress me. It did not do what a sad backstory was supposed to do which was: pull on my heart strings so that I give him sympathy in the form of plot armor so that I’m willing to look past how awful he is. Like come on, you’re immortal- you live long enough and something sad is going to eventually happen! Doesn’t mean you quit your job and become so cruel that Satan has a poster of you above his bed for personal inspo. spice- I can be a proud trash panda when it comes to spice. This is, easily, the single worst spice I have ever read. It wins the award of THE most cringe, ew, this is doing the opposite of what it should, spice writing. It’s like she taught a bot what dirty talk was by feeding it every terrible porno from the 70s ever created, and then wrote down whatever it spit out. I was flabbergasted, but in a bad way. body betrayal syndrome- we don’t yuck on people’s yums because that’s not cool. I’ve read books with body betrayal and it’s personally my least favorite trope, but I can still sometimes work past it. BUT CAN YOU CALL IT BODY BETRAYAL WHEN HES LITERALLY CONTROLLING HER BODY!? Im not like the other guys- I can put up with a lot, but I can’t put up with hypocrisy!! Drives me crazy, and I live with tiny human dictators so my tolerance is pretty freaking high. But I hate with all my soul when the MMC goes something like this: disgusted and unreasonably raged that the FMC is hurt by another man in a way that’s slightly different than the way that he’s currently harming her, so he’s all like “I’m a better man because I would never abuse you in that way but I’m definitely going to continue to abuse you in my own way”. If you’re going to make a character more towards the morally black side of things, commit to it, own it. Dont have him compete in moral Olympics with other crimes, he’s gonna lose. Stay ahead and just accept that he’s shitty and that the other guy was shitty. I can get on board if an author is honest with the character: like this guy sucks but at least he’s self aware and knows it. onomatopoeia- LOL. There were an absurd amount of these and they did not create drama and anticipation. They literally read like commercial jingles and I couldn’t not take them seriously. And I just am concerned that no editor was like, hey maybe chill out with these.
And that’s about as much as I can say, because that’s pretty much all that happened in the first half!
In all, don’t recommend this. BUT you never know, some of the books I love, others have hated. Some of the books others have hated, I could inject straight into my veins. So when in doubt, find out for yourself!
