Counterfeit Nokia 2780

After being in the market for a dumbphone for a while, I landed on the Nokia 2780 as it was the best fit for my use case. I ordered from Amazon, and after receiving it in the mail I noticed several problems.

Firstly, the packaging. Instead of the solid cardboard box with printed images on the outside like I had seen elsewhere, this was in what I would describe as an “iPod Nano”-style box, a hard clear shell showing the device and a cardboard box connected to it with all the paperwork and accessories.

The exterior of the device had a few cosmetic scuffs, but another big red flag came from the removable back. It did not align properly with the device, and there is a visible gap present on the side with the headphone jack.

In the software, there was no google maps or KaiOS store apps. Trying to add a google account in settings did literally nothing, and the listed version of KaiOS was 2.5 instead of 3.0+, with no ability to update. There are also several typos, particularly when describing the device name, with “Flif” and “Filp” in place of “Flip.”
