There's selfishly having kids, and there's selfish with a lifelong inherited disease and still having kids
At a health event I was at, I met a lovely woman in her mid 30s with sickle cell anaemia. It's inherited disease with lifelong painful events and needing frequent admissions to hospital, and she was incredibly positive and upbeat despite the cards she was dealt. No issues there. Till she mentions that she has a 1 year old son and some ladies on our table go, 'oh how wonderful you were able to have a baby with your condition'.
I'm appalled because it's such a major disease with a reduced life span and risk of permanent disability, but decided to bite my tongue at the 'ooh' and 'how wonderful' comments until the lady with sickle cell mentioned she was waiting for the child to get to around 2 years to have him tested! So yeah, she got knocked up without testing the father to make sure he's not a carrier [you need one gene from mum and dad to get the disease].
At that moment, even the 'how wonderful' squad shut their mouths, cause WTF lady?
