Why are my cats ALWAYS sniffing each other’s butts

I know it’s for identification purposes, but these cats are siblings and have been living together since birth.. all of my cats do it, and they sniff their mom’s bottom too.. I really find it weird because they KNOW each other since birth, and other cats have been introduced years ago and they head butt all the time, so why are they sniffing bottoms
