Car camping: platform or roof tent?

Hey all,

New to camping and this is more car camping related so sorry if I’m posting in the wrong subreddit.

Just got a rav4 and been wanting to go camping but have pretty little experience. Bought the REI trail gate platform (haven’t tested it out yet but will soon) but I’ve been super interested in the idea of a roof top tent.

Been looking at second hand roof tents but they’re still expensive. Is it worth paying the $1000+? If so which tents or brands should I look for? Is it over hyped?

Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all.
