Getting prescribed birth control without a “well woman” exam?
I’ve been using birth control pills for acne and heavy periods since I was 15. I am now 25 and my gynecologist wants me to have a well woman exam before prescribing me birth control. I am not comfortable with this, and I need birth control for my painful cystic acne obviously.
Has anyone been able to get birth control without one of these exams? I had no problem getting prescribed birth control for 10 years, usually by a regular physician on a military base, and also a dermatologist (non military). I usually just went in an asked for birth control and that’s it. But the first time I see a gynecologist and she says I need a well woman exam.
Unfortunately, my new dermatologist doesn’t prescribe birth control. And my new PCP has also urged me to get the well woman exam and I’m afraid she might say the same thing before she can prescribe me pills. Many of them can’t tell me over the phone what the doctor is going to decide, so they just say, “the doctor needs to see you first and they will decide from there.” I just don’t want to make an appointment only to get there and be denied what I need. Waste of time and money.
Has anyone been able to get birth control without one of these exams? Which type of doctor was more willing to do so in your experience? Thanks.
