‘Can I have a dry white wine please?’
A lady comes up the other day with her 3 pals and asks for a glass of dry white wine, in her poshest accent, clearly pretending in hindsight that she knows what dry means.
I place a 1/4 bottle of chardonnay in front of her and she then asks if we have anything dryer. To add context we’re a beer and whiskey bar so our wine list is bog standard (3 whites - a pinot, chardonnay and sauvignon). I then say that Chardonnay is the dryest of our 3 choices.
She asks if we sell pinot grigio to which I tell her yes, we do, but that it’s not dry at all and in fact it’s the sweetest of the 3 whites we stock.
‘Okay yeah if you have pinot, that’s exactly what i wanted’
This is a common thing where I’m from and I feel like women hear people say it and think it makes them sound knowledgeable and/or posh to say it as well so they do so without knowing the meaning.
