Change kid’s gender on legal paperwork asap?

I'm the parent of a gender expansive kid who is 8. We live in the Bay Area, which I am so fucking thankful for with these election results.

My question: should I fast track changing my kid's legal paperwork to change her gender asap, or 1) don't panic yet 2) won't matter if I do or don't? Her birth certificate and passport currently have her gender listed as male. She currently uses she/they pronouns. She let us know that she wanted she/her pronouns and that she was a girl when she was just a bit over 4. At 7 she switched to they/them and was identifying more as non-binary, and for the past six months she's using she/they. I figured we'd all have some time for her to figure out where she felt most comfortable before trying to start any legal changes, but now I'm wondering if I need to push for something to protect her for whatever might be coming.

Sorry, just a mom who cares so damn much about her kid, panicking right now. (Sending so much love out to this community right now)
