Guest scam reselling their bookings
Has anyone experienced a guest reselling their bookings to other people?
I’m a new host and clearly not versed in all the ways people will screw you over and take advantage. But I got a day of booking requests, which I know can be a big red flag. However the guest had 25 five star guest reviews, said he was from NY and was a professor at NYU. And I didn’t have it booked for the weekend so thought, great. All of our communications he was polite and responsive. He reached out after he checked in and asked if there were more units available, that he had more family coming to town and not enough beds in the unit rented. I did not.
I did get tipped off that there were a lot of people coming and going from the apartment (no ring camera, another rookie move, I get it) but I wasn’t too alarmed bc I thought, this guy said he had rented a hotel for more of his family I figured they were meeting up there.
But this morning I started getting nervous and went over to check on it right after their checkout. Out walks a young kid, maybe 21 and I asked if he was the guy who booked it. He wasn’t. He openly explained that some guy online has a business where he rents airbnbs and then rents them to other people so they can party in those places!!
I knew not to rent to locals bc they’re just looking for a party house. But hacking or buying someone’s good airbnb account to rent and rerent?! Never heard of such a move. I’ve just signed up for something to help verify. Anyone else heard of this or what are you all doing to prevent fraudulent guest?
TLDR: someone’s gotten into a good airbnb account to book reservations and sell that reservation to local kids to party. They smoked and caused some fairly significant damage. And made me look like a jerk STR PM.
Edit: removed the verify software I’ve signed up for bc I’m not trying to promote anyone’s business. I’m genuinely looking for help.
