I want to like the game

My friend gifted this game to me and I've been playing with him for some time now, but I just hate it. I feel like its not for me at all and I can't bring myself to tell him. Even with mods I just can't seem to enjoy watching the fights happen. I've played other stage fighters but the twist this game has makes me bored out of my mind it. Sorry that this is just me ranting. I just need some advice because it was a gift and I really do want to enjoy it as much as my friend does.
