Usage of a specific song for the straight ship.
Just finished season two yesterday and I think that using “Picture You” by Chappell Roan for Kitty x Minho is an absolutely crazy decision.
To preface, this is not to say that this is homophobic, because like, obviously not, but I can’t understand the thought process behind it? It feels like they don’t understand their audience, particularly queer audience.
- Why specifically a Chappell Roan song?
Right now, Chappell Roan is probably the only (correct me if I’m wrong though) famous/mainstream artist who is That open about being a lesbian.
I can’t help but to think that whoever was in charge of choosing and approving the music for that Kitty x Minho scene is heterosexual (def not saying this as a fact, just a thought I had to try to understand the “why”), because what queer person would look at that scene and goes, “Oh, yeah! Let’s use One Chappell Roan song for this season and have it be for Kitty yearning over Minho!”?
It’s not like they didn’t have any other choice for the music. Plenty of other songs they could’ve chosen from.
- Why not use a Chappell Roan song for one of the sapphic ships instead?
One of my biggest peeves with this is the fact that they used One Chappell Roan song and have it be for the straight ship. I wouldn’t really have an issue if they did “Picture You” for Kitty x Minho, then did another Chappell song for Kitty x Yuri, Kitty x Praveena, or Yuri x Juliana.
To me, this really shows that they don’t understand their audience, specifically their queer audience. If they used a Chappell song for one of the sapphic couples, queer/sapphic fans of the show would be so so happy and it would literally be free marketing for them!
It’s not just that I personally have a problem with it, I also think that it’s not a very smart decision on their part.
What do you guys think?
