P-38 variants used in Sicily?

I’m currently building a 1:48 scale p-38j. Originally it was going to be a diorama with Richard Bong’s Lightning, but I’m currently reading Sicily 43 by James Holland and it got me thinking of making the diorama scene an airfield in Malta during the Sicilian invasion. Were J variants fighting there or only earlier F/G/Hs?
