Is there an internal battery?

It seems like poor design that somebody could snag the cable and it'll kill the headset. I can't imagine that apple would be comfortable with something like this (at its best, it's jarring and disorienting. At its worst its dangerous). I can't see that there is anything internal, while others (chatter and rumor afiak) have said there is 0 internal battery. Is there any insight on this?
