Turned down a £15k higher paid job because of train fare and taxes
Just wanted to rant a little.
I had a job offer that’s £15k more than my current role. Amazing, right?! Well it’s 3 days a week from London which I was completely fine with.
However with the higher tax bracket this put me in and the cost of trains to and from London 3 days a week the £15k is completely gone. How insane is that?!
So I’m better off staying in a job that pays £15k less because taxes and train fares are so high in this country that it’s not financially beneficial whatsoever for me to take a higher paying role.
What. A. Joke.
EDIT:
As people are asking the train costs:
Return train ticket varies between £60-£70.
Tube travel to office is £7.
All day car park at initial station is £7.
So that £74-£84 a day. Let’s say £80.
£80 x 3 days a week is £240.
£240 x 47 weeks a year (allowing for weeks off) = £11,280 a year on train, tube and parking.
Yes there’s some season tickets but the saving is limited.
