"Where are they now?" internet personalities
Randomly youtube, as it does, changed all my recommendations for stuff to things ive never watched. Now often thats "oops you looked at one video about an mmo time to flood your page with right wing reaction outrage vampires" or some shit but lately its been hitting a weird choice that is largely "things or people you used to watch like half your lifetime ago in the 2000's".
Theres been some notable stuff like shockingly the Cinema Snob is still around and appears to be doing better than most of those old angry critics that just kind of got swallowed up by the bit and became bitter burnouts so hey good for him for escaping that particular nadir but the ones thats surprised me most is how a lot of games journalists from the 2000's are all streaming but not really like you'd think when you hear the term.
Like you hear 'streaming' and you think somebody with -more often than not nowadays- some kind of rigged avatar repeating the same few dopamine trigger terms like "lessggooooo" nonestop to really nail in the last few unhammered pins on the attention span coffin and interacting with an audience as a performative, parasocial kind of deal.
I'm talking more "radio show host with a facecam" type stuff. A notable example was Jeff Gerstmann from Gamespot and later, after the troubles, Giant Bomb now hosts a one man show where he reviews energy drinks and plays old NES games in an attempt to rank every US released game. Meanwhile Dan Ryckert does similar sitting on a couch, drinking beers and slapping a bunch of those buzzer things that make old radio morning shock jock sounds when he's not on one of his homer simpsonesque adventures as a living cartoon.
The audience seems to treat it like a retirement home kind of deal but not in a cruel way. Like they dealt with layoffs, buyout and general media corpo horseshit and now they can make a living not dealing with any of that but still have a passion for videogames. With Gerstmann in particular it was funny because for all the times you hear people say Pat is "Vinny Vinesauce from the timeline where he got all the ufo conspiracy shit out his system" it was odd to see these guys you would go to for the bid e3 presentation news basically doing the same formatted stuff as Pat. Just with a lot more energy drinks, like god damn that poor mans heart.
It feels like more often than not re-stumbling on some old internet persona you used to follow just ends in "yeah they had some massive scandal and vanished" that its kind of refreshing to see some that are either just keep on keepin' on or succeeding in a newer more modern venue when others couldnt and kind of fell behind and got forgotten.
Have you ever had similar where the algorithm decided it was time to check on up your old media habits you forgot about and its surprising to see where people went over the years?
