Owl boxes? (attention: BIRDERS)
I was given an owl box as a gift. I'd love to use it successfully, but I live inside St. Paul city limits, and I have never seen an owl in 8-10 years here.
Is there a possibility of installing this thing in a way that makes an owl possible/probable to have a think about living there? Here's my setup, a summary of environmental factors that I see an owl being interested in:
- native-ish city lot (.20 acres, no pesticides, no-lawn, etc etc)
- large trees (maple, oaks, and an ash. yes i have it treated)
- light pollution (not a dark property at all, not even close)
- rodents present. Squirrels, shrews, chipmunks, rabbits and mice have been found to live here. (I have a bird feeder and bird bath that draws them, no question.)
- people-free: both I and my 1 neighbor do not make much use of the front/back yard
I can't think of much else, but if you know birds and know anything about my chances with an owl box, then ask away, or point me to good resources. Thanks.
