Todd should do a video on Gershon Kingsley and Hot Butter's "Popcorn"
"Popcorn", the first electronic song, John Cage's Imaginary Landscape, No. 1 predates it by 30 years but that's barely a song. I'm not sure what video type he'd cover the song in, maybe One Hit Wonderland? Gershon Kingsley's original didn't chart, but Hot Butter is a true one hit wonder as their cover was their only song to reach the Billboard Hot 100.
Also, their version is worse than Kingsley's, and it annoys me it's the one most are familiar with. It's not a bad song, and may be one of first disco songs, but Kingsley's just sounds so spacey and futuristic, even 55 years later. It's like a predecessor to 90's trip hop and acid jazz. Of course, we can't not mention Crazy Frog's cover. It's even in Sega's 1982 arcade game, Pengo.
Is there any song as timeless as "Popcorn"? I don't think so. Even if you don't like electronic music, you have to respect it. Disco, synth-pop, techno, rave and dubstep may never have existed without it.
Edit: Gershon Kingsley is a one hit wonder... in the UK. Everywhere else he's a no hit wonder. "Popcorn" peaked at #63 on the Official Singles Chart Top 100... in 2018. Better late than never.
