Tristam Shandy
For those who have a far more literary bent than I do, is it possible in any way that Shandy's name was somehow a reference to the 18th century 9-volume novel, "The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy, Gentleman?" It's a highly discursive novel which claims to be about the titular protagonist's life, but doesn't get around to the subject of his birth until the third volume. I don't immediately see a parallel, but since Shandy was all over the place, maybe it's a sly reference?
