Routine to give gum

I’m allowed to have & give out gum in my classroom. I know it could be controversial so I know I’m lucky. What I’m looking for is some legit advice on how to dole it out when asked so that I don’t end up feeling used, for lack of a better way to explain it.

[ETA: I’m not looking for incredulity at doing this. We know kids can be disrespectful, but mine aren’t & it is what it is. I’m looking for brainstorming suggestions. If you’re here to say how I shouldn’t do this, this isn’t the post for you.]

I initially used to just offer it when asked but quickly got overwhelmed by the number of boys who would descend on my desk like locusts on wheat. So I started requiring them to have a genuine conversation with me, ask about my day or plans or anything. It was actually kinda fun for a little bit & it was really good practice for students with behavior and social issues, but again, turned into performative conversing. So I’ve stopped giving it out while I figure out how I can resume without it descending into chaos.

Anyone got any ideas on how to do this short of buying a penny gumball-type machine? (kidding but also not).
