Housing lottery

hi everyone, current freshman here. I know the housing portal for next year opens up in March, but could someone explain the process of it to me? I’ve heard there’s some sort of lottery system but i haven’t found a ton of information on it. just trying to start thinking ahead so that when it comes around I have more of an idea. Thanks!
