This “lowly” sub made 49K in 2024
So, I’ve had a few people scoff at me when I say I’m a substitute teacher. You know the look—the one that says, “Oh, that’s not a real job.” Some even assume I’m barely scraping by. And yeah, I get it. Subbing isn’t glamorous, and I’m not out here molding young minds like a full-time teacher. My job mostly consists of taking attendance, making sure no one burns the school down, and chilling with the kids.
But then I casually mention that I made $49,000 last year. Suddenly, their tone changes. For context, I live in a place where 49K isn’t a ton of money, but it’s still a solid paycheck—especially for a gig that requires minimal prep and stress compared to a full-time teaching role.
It’s honestly hilarious seeing people go from condescending to low-key impressed in a matter of seconds. Subbing isn’t for everyone, but I’ll take my paycheck and peace of mind any day.
