Is Sonic Adventure really as bad as some say?

I beat Sonic Adventure today and I loved it. Even through all it's flaws I think it was great and Open Your Heart is incredible. My question is, do people believe the public consensus that SA1 was bad? Was it really a rough transition, or is it actually pretty awesome?
