Revisiting "Hide and Seek" and what the what?

I rewatched episode 4, "Hide and Seek" for like the umpteenth time (I always write this because I have no idea how many times I have rewatched this show - too many to count). I want to know more about Optics and Design, aside from their painting curation.

HELLY: This is more people than I have ever seen.

MARK: Ahhh, same.

BURT: [to O&D] It's okay. I know change can be disorienting. But MDR is here now. [to MDR] You are welcome here, much as I hope all of us will be welcome to visit you at your place of endeavors.

Now go on. Surely you must have some questions for them.

ELIZABETH (O&D worker); So, it's called Macrodata Refinement? What do you were refine?

MARK: Ahh...

IRVING: Is that a watering can?

BURT: We think it might be supplies for the executive wing upstairs. Then again, last weeks output had more of an aggressive feel.

ELIZABETH: The hatchets weren't aggressive.

FELICIA: Shhhhhh

HELLY: Hatchets?

MARK: We've been trying to figure out how it all fits together. We found a Dept. the opposite way from here that's, ahhh, raising baby goats.

BURT: Raising baby goats?

There is a lot unknown to us as well, but we keep plugging along. It's important work obviously.

IRVING: Everything we do here is important.

HELLY: It's important because it actually is or because you're saying it is?

MARK: Look, maybe we should work together on this...

I mean, why won't they tell us what we're doing here? What-What are they so afraid of? If the Eagan philosophy is illumination above all--

IRVING: Illumination beyond all.

MARK: Then why doesn't that include us? Why are we down here still working in the dark?

DYLAN: That was poetic as shit, man.

So what the hell are the hatchets for?! And I love Mark's effort to try to join forces with Burt to figure out what they all do at Lumon. Let's hope we learn more about other departments in season 2 - I know we have been promised answers about the goats and there has been endless theorizing on this over last few years.

And I love Helly always getting to the heart of the matter.
