"Don't tread on me"

How is this motto/symbolism perceived in San Diego? The historical meaning and original intent seems more relevant today than ever in this country, as a message of defiance against tyranny and willingness to fight for what is right. But I understand it has been appropriated by certain right wing groups, so there is maybe an assumption that it's a right wing symbol.

Just wondering what goes through people's minds when they see this. Would be awesome to take back this symbolism and restore its original significance as a subtle way to send a message that we will not allow ourselves to be trampled on by those who would see our liberties stolen and dismantled.
