Is My Advisor a Mythical Creature?

Genuine question—do advisors actually reach out first? Mine only shows up when I summon him (aka send an email), and at this point, I’m starting to think he’s more of a legend than a real person. To be fair, I’m on the no-call list, so all communication is through email, but I’ve seen people talk about their advisors sending reminders or check-ins. Meanwhile, I’m over here wondering if I need to send a carrier pigeon. Is this normal, or are some advisors just super hands-off? Not that I mind—he’s usually fairly helpful when I do reach out (even if it sometimes takes a week to hear back), but I can’t help wondering if I’m missing out on some secret club of proactive advisors.

Edit Just throwing it out there that I'm on the Do Not Call list as part of an accommodation, so taking calls isn’t an option for me. I also don't dislike my advisor nor am I upset with my situation, just curious and was wondering how common advisors reaching out actually is.
