How much could the Giants pay Rōki Sasaki?
Let's break down the dollars and cents of what the Giants can actually offer Rōki Sasaki.
For the 2024-2025 International Free Agent signing bonuses, they're allotted $5,146,200, the lowest amount possible and tied with the Dodgers. For the sake of the rest of the math here, I'm not going to be even close to that level of accuracy.
But on Jan. 15, it's expected that the Giants will commit $2.5 million to Josuar Gonzalez of the Dominican Republic and $1.1 million to Djean Macares of Aruba.
However, the Giants are also allowed to trade for up to 60% of their original allotment, so final offer, the Giants can pay Sasaki about $4.6 million dollars, if they trade for about $3 million in bonus pool money.
Is this possible? Yes. There's teams like the Orioles, Guardians and Rockies who have $6.9 million in pool money and no plans to sign any top-shelf international free agent. The Phillies and Rangers are also sitting on about $6.2 million and no international plans.
And yet, the obvious villain is obvious. The Dodgers also don't have a single international free agent committed, and could without trades offer $5.1 million. With a trade for more money, they could offer $8.2 million.
Side note: the Padres can only currently offer $3.9 million, or $7.6 million with trades.
