What e-reader do you use?
I’ve searched the sub for previous discussions and I’ve found a few but I’m wondering if there’s been any changes to the suggestions within the last year.
My 10th gen Kindle Paperwhite seems have met it’s demise (despite using it to read this morning 🤷🏼♀️). I’m a KU reader that usually reads 250+ books a year. I like the idea of leaving the Amazon ecosystem but fear I will miss all the self-published titles from authors who are locked in to the KU world.
I’ve been debating between sticking with Kindle or moving to Kobo. I like the ease of downloading a book and having it synch to my Kindle quickly. Being able to add a completed book to my Goodreads (so it populates my Fable app) is very convenient. For those who have made the switch, have you felt like you missed out? Is there the same selection of romance authors? Does Kobo offer something similar to KU? Can you add books to your Kobo as easy and update your Goodreads? Help!
(I’m in Canada and audiobooks are not a preference. There’s only a $15 CAD price difference in the devices. Switching to Kobo would take a lot of time to manually download and transfer my Kindle books to a Kobo device since I have thousands of books and my current Kindle isn’t being recognized by my computer. )
Edit: Thank you so much for sharing your experiences! I really wasn’t expecting so many comments but I appreciate you taking the time to contribute to the discussion. I haven’t made a final decision, I need to spend more time exploring the catalogue for Kobo and my local library. Here’s the TL:DR of feedback (and my really basic price info):
Kindle ($): seems to still be popular, especially if you’re an avid reader and don’t mind paying for KU. A good selection of authors and genres for romance. Some self-publishing authors are locked in to the Amazon system and their work doesn’t seem to be available on other platforms.
Kobo ($$): favoured by those who want to borrow books from the library and purchase books from Kobo or Kobo+ (you can also connect your account to several indie bookstores to help support them!). Some limitations on author and genre/trope selection for romance (their catalogue is just not as large for romance, so if you’re a romance only reader, preview their catalogue).
Boox (variety of models) ($$$): essentially an e-ink tablet. You can read in almost any file format and through both the kindle and kobo app.
Tablet/Ipad mini ($$-$$$$): seems many people enjoy using a table for reading because of the flexibility of reading apps and other entertainment apps.
