Doubles - Why do People do This?

I’m generally not too critical about my teammates in Doubles, even when they seem truly awful. I understand that everyone has a different playing style, and, after all, I am ranked no higher than they are.

But after reaching Diamond I am shocked that so many people still do one thing: go for the corner boost on tip-off instead of protecting the goal. In my experience it significantly increases the chances of the other team scoring off the bat.

Anyone else feel this way? If not, please help me understand why!
