Surgery sucks, can I go directly to R1 rads?

Categorical surgical subspecialty intern here. I was genuinely torn between rads and a surgical subspecialty as a 4th year med student. Ended up choosing surgical sub bc it was badass and now life sucks with no hope in sight. I loved surgery as a med student. Even now, I actually get to the OR a lot and get to do stuff, but there's no spark no joy no enjoyment at all in surgery for me. In the OR I'm literally just staring at the clock and thinking about how I should have chosen rads. I know i'm just an intern, but my upper levels do not look much happier than I am either so it's currently difficult for me to believe that things will get better.

If I make the switch to rads, can I transition directly into an R1 spot next year (assuming there are openings) or do I have to go through anther intern year before I can jump to rads? Has anyone else jumped ship from surgery to rads? What's the best way of telling my program?

Thanks familia
