Thoughts on Nneka
This is a VERY unpopular opinion, so I’m ready for the rebuttals, lol.
However…. For her first season, I think she brought more to the table than what people give her credit for. In my opinion, the dynamic divide of S8 along with the allegations of xenophobia that Nneka was subjected to for outwardly addressing the things that her cast-mate’s relatives were saying about her plagued her and created an unfair perception (in my opinion) of who Nneka was inherently.
As for what she brought to the table in her first season, she allowed us into her world as a second generation immigrant who had established herself with a prestige occupation as a lawyer along with her relationship with her husband who also, from the same heritage as his wife, established himself well into the states as an MD. Them navigating their IVF journey in their solo scenes along with refreshing moments of her with her family was so pleasant to witness. She gave a decent performance, as it pertains to her personal life, as a first season HW. Like many other first time Housewives on RHOP (i.e: Candiace & Wendy- their first seasons were also slow paced and they really shined more brightly in their sophomore seasons), Nneka did not get the best opportunities to really shine, but I’m also confident that she would’ve been able to fit in well with the current group while also getting more into her role as a Bravo-celebrity if she was given the fair chance to return to S9.
Now… the big reason why Nneka gets so much flack is due to the contentious relationship she had with Wendy on screen, along with her falling victim to the social discord surrounding RHOP concerning the “ism-s” that plagued the show by this point. Nneka, although some may say unwisely, chose to bring up the conversations that Wendy’s mother and sister had about her joining the show to the group of ladies. Now, I believe that her labeling Wendy’s mom a witch during their argument did not settle well for her due to the climate of the show and the conversations that were held on social media about “ism-s” and other social phenomenons. However, I’m also inclined to more believe that the conversation that Wendy’s mother had with Nneka’s cousin did take place, along with the unsavory things that Wendy’s mom said about Nneka. And I also believe that, to a large extent, that her mom’s thoughts of Nneka were sentiments that were also shared by Wendy herself (not that this will be fully admitted lol).
Unfortunately for Nneka, the narrative of her being xenophobic towards Wendy was pushed against her will, and I believe the she did not expect for that narrative to have taken a direction that it did… however that’s something where she failed to have hindsight on. RHOP by the end of s7 was covered with conversations about how the women of the group mistreat each other and how certain social phenomenons are displayed onto the show with little accountability. I’m not gonna go into how the show is problematic or etc….. I just think that the current climate of the show’s group dynamics and the attitude of the core fanbase lead to production making desperate attempts to separate themselves from the criticism that RHOP was facing. Unfortunately, Nneka, despite being such a great HW, ended being let go do the initiatives of production to move forward from the negative press.
I’m alone when I say that regardless, I miss Nneka and I appreciate the potential she had in being a good addition to RHOP. & I might sound like a hater, but I honestly enjoyed her more than I am enjoying Kierana as a FT housewife. But I’m here to give Nneka her flowers since on one else will lol.
