Question: Are planted aquariums that hard?

Since I was a child, me and my dad would build aquariums from scratch. Its an old hobby of his, and now I love it too. The thing is, we always built planted tanks, no big deal. I never had a big concern in my mind about keeping those tanks. Plants would grow, some would die, but we would always have a fine aquarium, populated or not, and be happy.

Recently, ive been researching more about aquariums and planted tanks. There seems to be a big thing surrounding these, as if they are hard to keep and that only pros should do so. Theres also a TON of information that I never knew about, such as Co2 usage, and never really mattered at all.

So heres my question: Is it that hard? Should I actually do my research and start planning, arranging and keeping my planted tanks better?
