Wrestling with the Medicine Skill
I'm not trolling here, I've not doubt that his has been discussed to death, but I haven't time to hunt down the posts on it, so please if this post annoys you just pass it by rather than tossing a fireball at me.
My group and I ported to 2e from D&D 5e last December and we're all delighted that we've done so. PF2e is immensely more satisfying to us than 5e ever was as a system, and with nearly 9 months behind us we are ready to try to address some of the few things we are not happy with about the system. To understand our problem, it will help to know how our sessions tend to run. We are a roleplay heavy group and I'm what is usually described as a gritty style DM. I'm running Kingmaker and the group has advanced to 4th level in all that time because of our RP focus and my slow levelling style. I'm running Kingmaker 2e, with a ton of custom content (I've rewritten a lot of the adventure and introduced my own stories). A typical session revolves around a lot of PC/NPC interactions and maybe one big fight. This matters because it changes the resource dynamic regarding what the game expects. We play for 4 hours every week, and PC combat resources really only have to handle one encounter per game rather than 4-5. In game world terms, it's common to go 3-5 days with only one combat encounter. They are just about to go up against the Stag Lord Fort, so that balance will change, but only for that climax.
So, the problem is that with a healing spec cleric, and three characters with the medicine skill, combat damage once an encounter is over becomes inconsequential. There are just no negatives to having just survived a desperate fight. In a couple of hours everyone is back up to full HP and sans any wounds and life is a cherry pie. This was one of things we all hated about 5e. The heal heavy cleric on his own is hefty insurance against long term pain from combat, but the medicine skill is so powerful that its MORE effective than divine healing once the last enemy is leaking it's guts out all over the forest floor.
We decided last session that we have to fix it, and do it immediately, only as the GM I'm not sure how to go about it. I don't want to break the game while trying to fix it. So, I am putting this forth on the forum to see if anyone else has had to deal with something similar to solicit ideas.
Thanks.
Edit: I am not suggesting btw, that the game is broken. I am saying that for the way WE play, MY group, the medicine skill as written simply does not work. It is broken for US, not necessarily for anyone else. Just wanted to explain that I understood this before anyone reminded me that their favorite game is perfect and doesn't need someone to come in and fix it. There is always someone who wants to be more right than the next guy.
