Too much comedic panels for serious moments [A Stepmother’s Marchen]
I was expecting to like this webcomic a lot more than I currently do, though hopefully I end up liking it more as I progress through the story. The art is well done, the characters are pretty good, the premise actually seems interesting. But my one gripe with it so far is the fact that they keep defaulting to ‘comedic’ panels too much, especially for serious moments where I wanted to appreciate the gravity of the situation. One example would be early on when Shuri was confronting the aunt and uncle for trying to turn the entire household against her, she bans them from the estate, actually gets slapped by the auntie, but then the artstyle for everyone who witnesses this serious scene end up being comedic wide-eyed panels? It felt really out of place for the situation, and even Shuri’s retaliatory punch was drawn in a comedic manner. Heck, even when the twins suddenly jump in to help Shuri was portrayed as a comedic moment. I was under the impression that Shuri standing up for herself and the children to the evil aunt and uncle was supposed to be a significant point for the characters involved, but the lighthearted way in which the scene was drawn didn’t sit right with me.
