Do universal morals/ethics exist?
On a few philosophical subreddits i have seen discussions on how universal morals/ethics can exist without a god/higher power existing. This wasn’t relating to any specific religion, simply that the fact that there are universal morals/ethics must mean that there is a higher power of some kind.
I saw a few comments where people were saying that the existence of universal morals/ethics does not inherently prove the existence of a higher power and that there could be other explanations.
The thing that confused me is that I have always assumed that aren’t any universal morals/ethics. I believe that many we are familiar with are universal across humans and some are shared with other social animals but that any “universal” morals/ethics are simply traits that evolved in humans and other social animals to promote cooperation and aid in collective survival.
I am not seeking to disprove the existence of a higher power or to suggest that we shouldn’t follow any moral or ethical guidelines. I am simply confused as to why everyone in these posts was acting as if universal morals/ethics were a given, as if they were a fact and that only the reason they exist was up for debate.
