Can a regular hospital treat children?

I'm a teenager who's had health problems nearly half my life, and every specialist I have is at a children's hospital, despite the fact that it's over an hour away and there is a regular hospital far closer. This makes me wonder... can a regular hospital treat children at all? Or is it a preference for parents not to choose a regular hospital, if a pediatric one is an option?
