This Orchid Pretends It's A Wasp | The Green Planet | PBS
Heard about this one on "The Light Eaters" episode of Crime Pays, Botany Doesn't...
That episode sort of opened my eyes to the vast amounts of information floating around out there between plants and bugs, and even other plants.
The episode goes on to discuss that the orchid manufactures pheromones to attract the wasp, and it mimics the backside of the female wasp...so it's essentially using the wasp as a tool to get pollinated.
Lots of other good discussion about plant mimicry and other fun thoughts about plants.
Nancy Lawson's book Wildscapes digs into a lot of the signaling going on out there too...
In case all you good folks are bored I guess...this can burn a few hours.
