Do I need to watch episodes in order?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I've never watched any of the NCIS shows (or much TV at all in the past 10-15 years or so!). I tried searching, but the discussions I found seemed to center on whether you need to watch each show/season within the universe in a particular order.

What I'm wondering is, if I have the NCIS shows set to shuffle-play in random order (along with various other shows), is that a terrible way to watch? Are there cliffhanger endings from one episode to the next, and/or important plot elements and story arcs that span multiple episodes, across the entire season, or even across multiple seasons?

Or is each episode at least mostly a "self-contained" story?

Edit: Thanks for all the advice... I will keep these out of my random TV show rotation, and just manually watch them an episode or two at a time.
